On June 6, 2023, the launching ceremony of the Steering Committee of the International Carbon Materials Union (ICMU) was held during the 5th Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Conference. At the closed-door meeting of the initiators of the ICMU held on the same day of the conference, William Liu, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of Beijing Association for Advanced Carbon Industry Promotion, introduced the preparation of the organization, and the members of the union put forward constructive comments, and all participants jointly formulated the roadmap for the preparation of the union after careful consultation.

The International Carbon Materials Union (ICMU) stands as an all-encompassing international cooperation institution concentrating on the technological and industrial dialogue within the sphere of carbon materials, principally represented by graphene. This union owes its genesis to the collective endeavour of the Beijing Association for Advanced Carbon Industry Promotion (BACIP) along with a consortium of forty leading research institutions, technology industrialisation entities, third-party service establishments, and international associations spanning the globe. The core aim of the union is to craft an open, forward-looking platform for carbon material technology and industry, as well as international exchange. Additionally, it strives to stimulate scientific and technological research and industrial cooperation while providing a collaborative environment for union members to jointly create and share resources for mutually beneficial and cooperative advancement.
